Common plant problems in the Atlanta area
Atlanta’s growing season provides plants with almost year around growth. Because of this long growing season pest populations can build to thresholds where plant damage can occur. The natural and man-manipulated environment in Atlanta can also cause stress and eventual decline in our landscapes and forests. The following is a list of some of the more common pests, cultural problems and environmental problems we may encounter year to year.

Fall Pruning

Limit your pruning to only long shoots, especially those of you that use plant cuttings for your winter and holiday arrangements.  Do not do heavy pruning in the fall.  This will initiate heavy new growth which can be severely damaged by the winter weather. Excessive pruning also increases the plant's need for water.  Either way you will end up with burned leaves which do nothing for the aesthetics of your plantings. It is perfectly fine to prune out any dead or damaged tissue that developed over the summer.

Be sure to water and hydrate the root systems before any pruning to reduce plant stress and promote recovery.
